13 reasons why you should watch ‘13 Reasons Why’

I only needed three days to watch all thirteen episodes. I think I could have even done it in one day, but umm yeah, there has to be work and sleep and all that sort of stuff, and I was also busy binging ‘Big Little Lies’ (holy bleep, that one is also so insanely good). My bestie sent me a message asking if I was already following the series, because he had just seen it on Netflix. Furthermore, every site I visit daily had something to say about the series, so yeah, that series FOMO really kicked in for me. Luckily, I found my series partner in crime for ‘13 Reasons Why’ (hi, Lil) at the editorial office, because it’s just the best when there’s someone at work with whom you can discuss all the OMG moments. Because believe me: there are, a lot actually.

Haven't started yet? Here are thirteen reasons why you must watch ‘13 Reasons Why’:

  1. This concept simply doesn't exist yet. A story about a seventeen-year-old girl who commits suicide and leaves behind thirteen cassette tapes for thirteen recipients, so you find out why she decided to end her life.
  2. There aren't many series that revolve around bullying. The strength of this series is that it focuses on how even the small things, the comments you think don't mean much, can deeply affect someone. Maybe the series is even confronting, because you might recognize yourself in certain situations.
  3. You could read it here : one of the producers of the series is Selena Gomez.
  4. It was actually intended for Selena to take on the role of main character Hannah, but they decided to give it to Australian actress Katherine Langford instead. How she portrays Hannah is definitely worth watching.
  5. The series has also received quite a bit of criticism because some scenes are very intense. Among other things, the suicide scene, but there are also depictions of rapes. I understand that this might be a bit too intense for a very young audience, but the series does pay attention to two horrific events that unfortunately occur far too often in real life. The effect they have on young girls and women is shown, as well as what it does to boys and men.
  6. You don't have to be in high school to find points of recognition. It doesn't matter what your age is; parties, dating, and friendship are all parts of your life, so the series is really not just linked to your younger self.
  7. And for the slightly older among us who watch the series; it’s also a wake-up call to remind us how difficult it was to be a teenager.
  8. The series shows why it’s important to always have a good support system in your own life. That you really can't do without it.
  9. There are also quite a few well-known faces in the series; Kate Walsh from Grey’s Anatomy and Fargo, and Dylan Minnette from the series Scandal, for example.
  10. And the soundtrack of the series is also recommended. A personal favorite is the song ‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron, but you also hear quite a few songs from Joy Division and The Cure.
  11. Life motto: kindness doesn’t cost a damn thing. Sprinkle that sh*t like confetti. We should do this more often together.
  12. ‘13 Reasons Why’ also shows how good it is to stand up not only for yourself but especially for others around you.
  13. And uh, of course, you just want to see it to be able to talk about it with everyone.

Time to start binging.
