Love & Sex

Because there weren't enough dating trends yet...

So I recently learned what tindstagramming was and breadcrumbing, but the list of crazy online dating trends is far from finished, as I came across a few newbies again this week. Anyway, dating in 2017 is just, as our Renske always said, next level. You ready?

Kittenfishing

Look, we all knew about catfishing of course. Pretending to be someone you’re not, using someone else’s photos, telling stories that belong to someone else… Anyway, just put on the MTV show if you don’t quite get it yet. There is also a slightly lighter form of catfishing, called kittenfishing. This means that someone presents themselves just a little differently than they actually are. As in: with photos that are extremely edited or from ten years ago, lying about their real height, and making up stories that are just a little different than they actually are. Here are three kittenfishing ‘red flags’:
– The person posts a lot of old photos
– All ‘newer’ photos are headshots, the whole body is never shown
– Apparently, he or she also makes a lot of grammatical errors in the bio (no idea why, but it’s said to be so)

Zombieing

Zombieing is actually just another name for submarining. Just read here.

Benching

Benching is also part of modern dating. Someone you think really likes you, but what you don’t know is that you are their plan B in case their first option doesn’t work out.

Slow fading

This is just a bit neater than ghosting, because it’s not that you suddenly never hear from someone again, but that it gradually just decreases. The downside is that the person who uses this actually didn’t find you that interesting from the start but never said it, so you’re still dealing with mixed signals.

A few more dating terms that are handy to know:

DTR – Define the relationship. Here the ten signs that it’s time for ’the talk’.
MIOO – Make it online official. Think of an Instagram photo of you together (instaffical) or something similar.
Cuffing – Apparently, we are currently in the ‘cuffing season’, the season where singles are looking for a partner for the cold winter months. But ladies, didn’t you know that the winter months are actually the best months to be single?
Shipping – This means that you support a relationship. I don’t know exactly how it can be used in a sentence, but you are in any case that supportive friend who supports a relationship.

As always: happy dating!
