Survival guide for a hangover
So you were partying hard last night? Or over the railing of a boat? Then there's a good chance that, like me, you have a little hangover. And hey, that's just a sign that you had a great party, the king only has a birthday once a year after all. In fact, he only turns Abraham once. Anyway, enough chit-chat, and this rambling won't make anyone feel better. What is the best thing to do when you've had one too many?
- Even though it's getting light outside and the birds are starting to chirp, you might as well grab a few hours of sleep rather than skipping the whole night. A short nap is still better than no sleep at all.
- Don't stay in bed too long either and try to get back into your normal rhythm as soon as possible, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Take a refreshing shower and have a hearty breakfast. And no bacon and eggs or fries. Coffee is allowed, but remember that it only gives you a short burst of energy. Caffeine actually enhances the negative effects of alcohol.
- I hope for your sake that you don't have to show up at the office today, and in that case, take a good walk after your breakfast.
- Have a light lunch and after your meal, take a quick nap on the couch. A power nap, my friend, not a three-hour snooze, because that will only throw your body off balance.
- Water is your best friend today. Alcohol is dehydrating, so what you need today is as much fluid as possible. Turn on the tap to restore your hydration and eat fresh fruit to chase away your hangover.
- Just continuing where you left off is really the dumbest thing you can do. Alcohol on top of alcohol only makes it harder for your body to process the large amounts of alcohol from the previous night.
- Ginseng is the Chinese miracle cure for a hangover. As tea, it is invigorating and a good antioxidant. So, drink tea.
- Smoked too many cigarettes? Maybe very sexy for your voice, but your body is less happy about it. So go for the green smoothie and have a piece of fruit as well. Cigarettes reduce the amount of vitamin C in your body, so it's important to replenish that deficiency. And you don't do that by visiting the McDonald's, my friend.…
- And if you can't avoid that greasy snack, at least go for the right fats. A thick slice of hearty sourdough bread topped with avocado, sautéed spinach, grilled green asparagus, crumbled feta, and freshly ground black pepper is a heavenly combination with precisely the right ingredients against a hangover.
