Ikea's genius response to Balenciaga
The internet went crazy last week. The instigator? Fashion house Balenciaga, which launched a new bag. They do that more often, so why, you might wonder. But they came up with a design that suspiciously resembles the world-famous shopper from IKEA. “Yes, Adeline. We know, under which stone have you been lying?” I know, I know, but the Swedish home goods store came up with a very clever response yesterday and we need to talk about it.
The bag that you absolutely have had in your hands is called KRAFTA. A design by agency ACNE from Stockholm. It wrinkles, it cracks, is not smooth to iron, and it's a must-have when you move through the Swedish home giant. You recognize the bag by its unique blue, the characteristic crackle pattern, and the bold yellow brand name on the handles. For an impressive ninety-nine cents, it's yours. Until a week ago, you casually tossed it in the back of your car filled with empty bottles or used it as a moving bag, but not anymore. And if you think this was an accident, think again. Balenciaga's creative director Demna Gvasalia is the instigator and he just happened to be responsible for the hype around the DHL shirt.
But now there’s something else going on. I am allergic to fake. As in: I would rather eat the cheapest, tasteless crackers for five years than be caught with a flimsy copy. IKEA's sharp response actually makes that Balenciaga bag can be stolen from me. O.M.G., that I would ever say this. I want the original, I want the KRAFTA. My bag addiction has never been this cheap. For which I am infinitely grateful from me, my love, and my bank account. Oh, and where you shop it, you know yourself, right?
