Why missing King's Day is not so bad at all

(and packing your bags is much more fun)

Don't ask me how it's possible, but somehow I'm always away on King's Day. Not that this I-Hate-Smurf is deliberately fleeing the day, it just, eh, happens that way. Again this year there's a little trip planned, because Paris is always a good idea and my dear friend M. has been missing the inside of an airplane for WAY too long. So tomorrow morning, at a very unorthodox time, we’ll take the blue flying machine from my friends at KLM. And yes, I’m missing the big Orange Party again. And now that I think about it a bit longer, that's not such a crazy idea at all. Why? Here’s why:

You escape the NS drama dance

In a distant past, I once got on a train to celebrate King's Day in our capital. It was of course a bad idea, I knew that too, but being stubborn is also an art. And, God punished me immediately, the vomit was on my shoe within fifteen minutes. GREAT!

Orange never really looks good

No words needed. Come on, you know EXACTLY what I mean. And shall we also talk about those red/white/blue/orange alternating painted nails? The horror.

You can go to the bathroom whenever and wherever you want

Because that’s definitely the number one irritation: Not. Being. Able. To. Pee. When. You. Need. To. (Our Simoon has a house right in the center of Amsterdam and has a brilliant solution for others' pee problems: open house. People pay to empty their bladder and by the end of the day, you’re Bill Gates. Brilliant.)

‘On April 28, there will be a royal brunch on the terrace in Paris’

You feel great on April 28

Hangover, why? We don’t have that problem, you know! On April 28, there will be a royal brunch on the terrace in Paris. Those calories from the missed orange pastry have to be compensated somehow, duh.

You’re not going home with junk

I get really grumpy from those flea markets. People walk there excruciatingly slowly, everyone hopes to buy something nice, but ends up going home with old junk. Oh, really super nice, that hand-painted thimble from last year. Where is it again?

There are a thousand other cool things you can do on April 27

Adeline has already sniffed out a nice list for you. Click here maar even.

Wherever you go: The Weather Is Better There. Sorry.

Because did I just hear? That King's Day in Holland is going to be even colder than Christmas? With a chance of wet snow? I'm telling you: you have one more afternoon to book that ticket. Run, forest, run!
