The wrap dress
Whether I wanted to play teacher again was the question. Monday seemed like the perfect day for that. Glasses on, red pen in hand and let's talk. About fashion. Today the wrap dress aka the dress that looks just right on a size more. That can be quite nice too. Especially on a Monday. After a weekend with a bit too much brie de meaux and baguette, it's nice to know there's always a dress that fits you. This one.
What is it?
A wrap dress, catapulted to world fame by Diane von Furstenberg who brought it to market after her divorce and celebrated ‘the sexual freedom of women’ with it. An important asset in this is that you can put it on silently (because there's no zipper) and quietly leave the hotel room without waking that sleeping man, who looks much more exciting in daylight than when he treated you to a glass of Crystal champagne yesterday. The dress celebrates the curves of a woman. If you ask me, I think it looks better around a hospitable spirit than on a bony ribcage.
Who made it?
The dress became a concept through Diane von Furstenberg, but it certainly existed before. Elsa Schiaparelli (yes, the one with the Schiaparelli pink) made it in the thirties and Claire McCardell in the forties. But Diane jazzed it up, found the perfect knee length, and went wild with prints and colors. By the way, Diane von Furstenberg is a wonderfully colorful character from whom women can learn all of this. van kan leren.
How much does it cost?
Varies. A basic wrap dress starts at around three hundred, four hundred euros. But since the little creature has been around for a while, there are quite a few vintage variants to be found. For a price as soft as the décolletage that looks so good in it.
Who wears it?
DvF herself of course, but the Hilton sisters have also elevated wrapping to an art form. Kate Middleton finds the wrap dress the perfect mix of business and sexy, and Tori Spelling (you know) keeps hoping that the wrap dress will somewhat elevate her level of chic. To no avail, but still.
