Netflix documentaries that make you smarter
smarter
Whoever said that watching Netflix doesn't make you smarter has probably never looked at the selection of documentaries. The nice thing about this is, especially for the creators of the documentaries, that Netflix has given them a platform so that even more people have the opportunity to watch their work. Because let's be honest: you probably only watched documentaries when one was aired on TV. If you need some inspiration for your couch sessions but also want to learn something; here are some of the best documentaries on Netflix:
13th
This documentary is about the history of prisons in America and also provides insight into racial inequality in the United States. Did you know, for example, that in America one in four African American men will end up in prison at least once in their life? That's how the documentary opens. Shocking numbers, and if you're wondering why it's called ’13th’; the thirteenth amendment of the American constitution is about banning slavery and involuntary servitude. Do yourself a favor, and please add this to your must-see list.
Blackfish
Lies wrote here earlier about why you must watch this film. The way the animals are treated at Sea World is disgusting. Believe me, after this you will never want to go to a water park where orcas and other animals are kept.

Cocaine Cowboys
This is about Miami and the cocaine struggle of the eighties. The documentary follows the biggest names that caused a lot of scandals and drug dramas in the American city at that time.
Indie Game: The Movie
Gamers pay attention, this documentary is for you. Also addicted to ‘Call of Duty’ and other games? Indie Game follows the people who create it all and shows how difficult it is to create something that is not only innovative but can also earn a lot of money.
Amanda Knox
Do you remember the story of the girl who went to study in Italy as an exchange student for a few months and was then murdered? This documentary is about the main suspect in the Amanda Knox case and her perspective on the story.
Into the Inferno
Want to know more about all the active volcanoes in the world? Then check out this documentary by Werner Herzog, who travels to all corners of the world to explore the beauty, but also the dangers of volcanoes.
Making a Murderer
See here the reasons why you must have seen this.
What Happened, Miss Simone?
This revolves around the career of Nina Simone and her life from successful singer to human rights activist.
Update: Blackfish is unfortunately no longer available to stream on Dutch Netflix, but really, this documentary is a must-see.
