12 Years A Slave
This is the true story of Solomon Northup, a black man living in Saratoga with his wife and children in the 19th century. He is a very talented man in music who one day is kidnapped and sold into slavery. While he tries to convince people that he is a free man, he endures one horror after another as a slave. A powerful and especially heartbreaking story that is so beautifully made that it won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2014.
Coach Carter
In the mood to watch something in the sports genre? Coach Carter is about high school basketball coach Ken Carter who coaches his team in a very special way. They have to sign contracts that are also tied to their school performance, and Ken wants his team to win using discipline; not just on the court, but also in the classroom.
Lone Survivor
This story is based on a Navy Seals mission in 2005 called ‘Operation Red Wings’, which aimed to kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. In this film, actor Mark Wahlberg plays a role. Long story short: I think you'll score points if you watch this with your boy.
127 Hours
You really need a strong stomach for this one. Aron Ralston, played by James Franco, gets trapped under a rock during a hike in the mountains of Moab in Utah. And how he gets out? Well, I won't spoil it, but it's intense.
Moneyball
Once again, Brad Pitt on your screen in the film based on the book ‘Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game’ by Michael Lewis. Billy Beane (Brad) becomes the manager of a club with financial problems, but to ensure his team still achieves results, he uses a computer-generated analysis with his assistant to get his team into the World Series.
