Proven: you don't get a hangover from cheaper wine
Whoever wants to keep warm in a cozy way in this harsh winter time, is smart and naturally pours themselves a generous Chardo.
Now we have good news for all the penny pinchers among us: that delicious bottle of Malbec or Sauvignon doesn't have to cost a lot of money, because a cheaper wine won't give you a worse hangover. In fact: a wine that has aged for a long time and has been sitting in the cupboard for years often sits heavier on the stomach than one that you can easily gulp down. This is due to the substance histamine that is present in every wine (and which some people get a red face from after just one sip). The rule actually is that the older the wine, the more histamine it contains. And the more histamine, the more Advil you will need the next day.
And if you then have to choose between red or white, you might as well go for white. The darker the wine, the more headache you will get from it. But in red wine there is also often more alcohol, so that’s actually quite logical. Still, it is a choice between two worlds, because white wine can make you feel a bit more nauseous since it is a bit more acidic than red wine. Choose your battles, then.
Do you want to approach this winter completely responsibly and wisely? Then you drink glühwein: it is said to give you a better memory. This is because the red grapes used to brew the drink contain a substance that is good for your brain. Additionally, the antioxidants in your warm drink help keep your blood vessels flexible, which can absolutely be beneficial for your immunity. Look, that goes down so nicely, with those gloves on.
And yes, we hear you thinking: whether cheaper glühwein is also extra good for the day after... You can try that out for yourself. Will you let us know?
FACTS
- Glühwein can also be made from white wine. It is flavored with cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and lemon peels, and possibly sweetened with sugar or honey.
- Best tip: drink beer first, then wine. It saves you the next day too.
- You get drunk faster from prosecco, cava, or champagne. Drinks with bubbles, then. Hello, New Year’s Eve.
