So there is a fortune worth of unworn clothes in my closet...
One leg in, other leg, slowly pull up, and… just before I’m ‘there’, the skirt gets stuck at my hips. I think I’ve pulled the devilish thing out of my closet fourteen times already. Still intensely two sizes way too small, what a silly head I am.
What was I thinking? Actually, I know damn well. This was the ‘hopeful’ piece of clothing. The if-I-try-really-hard-I-might-fit-in-it piece. Which then, for sure, will never happen and three years later it feels like the thing is already out of fashion and Madame Rotrok with price tag and all goes straight into Max's bag. Outright embarrassing. I wish it only stayed with the hopeful piece of clothing, by the way. I recently discovered that I could fill a closet with all the clothing items that still have a price tag on them. Almost all came from the sale (you see: during the sale something snaps in my head, look here, here and yes, also here but). For a few tens of euros, a person can be easily persuaded. But do I wear it afterwards? No. Did I buy it purely for the ‘have’ because it was cheap? Uh, well. Say hello to an impulse purchase.
I’m not the only one. You have this kind of items lying in your closet too, right? You know it. To make the guilt feel even worse, it’s time to grab some hard numbers. Research from online marketplace Onbuy.com shows that the average woman has over 2687 euros worth of UNWORN items in her closet. I find that something. In fact, there’s a good chance that 60 percent of your closet is filled with clothes that you strategically slide your fingers past to grab the items you still wear. We. A bunch. Hoarders.
Is it all just mass consumption and misery? God, thankfully not. It turns out that especially millennials sell their (un)worn clothing much more often and are more conscious of the benefits of a minimalist wardrobe. A small ray of hope on the horizon: the average woman bought 37 items in 2016, while there were still 51 in 1996. Are we starting to learn a bit?
Shit man, I can only think about that 2687 euros of wasted money. I could have bought that new Gucci bag I have my eye on right away. Or uh, doesn’t it work like that?
Also nice to immediately grab: this way you stop making bad purchases in the sale. And by the way, did you know that you should NEVER just throw away clothes? Check here why.
