The best burger bars
in the country
So I grew up in a family of men, the youngest of four. The little princess among three trees of brothers where the man food regularly flew around my ears. And still, when I get a visit from one of the three men on the weekend, I know I need to look for a nice new hotspot where they mainly serve meat. Where one loves a good steak from the barbecue, the other prefers a little chicken from the grill or a good burger. The nice weather is coming again and I've pretty much had all the hotspots in Amsterdam. Time to look outside the ring for it. Dear L., this list is for you. When are you picking me up on the motorcycle?
1. Ter Marsch & Co – Rotterdam, but also in Amsterdam
You eat the tastiest burger here. Juicy and medium rare in the middle, wrapped in a crispy brioche bun. Add some fries with garlic mayo and you won't know what you're tasting. Date night? You'd better go for the truffle mayo.
2. Burgerlijk – Maastricht
In one of the, or perhaps the most fun street in Maastricht, you will find Burgerlijk. Join here for the tastiest burgers and gin tonics in the city. Even vegetarians can enjoy themselves here; the Portobello burger is deceptively delicious.
3. Meneer Smakers – Utrecht
Just because of the menu, I want to go here. Here you don't order an ordinary hamburger with cheddar, pickles, and fried onions, no, here your burger is called Aunt Truus or Uncle Jimmie. 4. Ich bin ein Hamburger – The Hague
I'm afraid it's going to be a round trip to The Hague this weekend. The monthly burger they serve at this favorite spot of Theo is a veal burger topped with green asparagus, ham hock, a poached egg, and duxelles. You want this, right?
5. Wereldburgers – Groningen
The reason I want to go to Groningen once? To taste the homemade burger of couscous, dates, and pine nuts from Wereldburgers. Sounds good, but it can be better... The burger is topped with grilled vegetables, harissa paste, red onion chutney, and goat cheese. Okay then, who feels like a day in Grunn?
6. Amsterdam – The Butcher
This is Daan's favorite. Juicy burgers as they should be, no carnival, but basic with only the best ingredients. High-quality Angus beef, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and Edam cheese. And they have sweet potato fries, which I think is a win.
7. Charlie’s Burgers & Steaks – Valkenburg
Vacation in your own country? You do that in South Limburg and then you can't miss the picturesque Valkenburg. You eat the best burger at Charlie’s, where there is a Wall of Fame for the real men. Eating the whole The Incredible Hulk 2.0 is a task meant only for real tough guys. Will you take on the challenge?
