The effect of different types of alcohol on your emotions

If I or someone else were to ask you what kind of type you are when you've been drinking, what would you say? Do you always get super emotional from the drink, do you become very rowdy, or are you blissfully happy? And do you also notice that there is a difference in terms of the type of drink? Well, research shows that the type of alcohol you consume can have different effects on your emotions. And speaking of alcohol, do you recognize the 12 phases of getting drunk with your best friends?

Through research published in BMJ Open with over 30,000 participants aged 18 to 34 from 21 different countries, they were able to analyze the four different types of alcohol and the emotions associated with them. The focus was on four positive emotions that a person can feel (energy, confidence, whether you feel relaxed, and how sexy you can feel) and five negative ones (feeling tired, sick, aggressive, ruthless, and emotional in the sense that you might cry). Here are the results:

Spirits

Prefer whisky or something else strong? The results of this study showed that people feel much more energetic after consuming spirits, but they also felt more confident and sexy. In terms of negative emotions, it wasn't too bad. People did occasionally feel sick from it, but yes, that seems pretty clear if you drink a lot of strong alcohol.

Rum

Feeling like a relaxing evening? Then go for a glass (or several) of red wine. This received the highest percentage when it comes to an alcoholic treat that makes you feel relaxed. But it also makes you tired, so there's a good chance you'll fall asleep on the couch pretty quickly. And uh, don't be surprised if tears flow more quickly here, that's also a side effect.

Jenever

Of the four types of drinks that were studied, white wine appears to have the least effect on your emotions. Everything scored quite low, so you don't really become rowdier from it, and you don't feel much sexier either. Do you want to know what your favorite wine says about you? Bekijk het hier.

Beer

Are you a beer drinker? Then this is your confidence booster in a glass. It also makes you calmer, which I find surprising, because for some reason I always thought that beer would make you rowdier. I have no idea what I base that on, but it turns out to be incorrect when you look at this research.

Anyway, if you drink a bit too much of all this, luckily we have the best breakfast tips  to beat that hangover.
