Top trips for the May holiday
I don't know which idiot thought that the May holiday falls in April (seriously, how illogical do you want to make it for people?), but the fact is that we are right in the middle of it. And if I hear even the slightest thing about the crowds at Schiphol, I get instant travel jitters. So I suddenly found myself during work hours (very responsible because research, duh) looking for fun city trips. This time no Paris, Barcelona, or London, but just something a bit different. These are the cities that are still (or again) on the travel list.
Toronto, Canada
First of all: Toronto is the official hometown of Harvey Specter (yes, Suits was definitely NOT filmed in New York), and every step closer to Harvey sounds like a life goal. Just like taking a selfie at the ‘Pearson Specter’ office, by the way. I want to go to the Distillery District, the extreme CN Tower Edgewalk, and paddleboarding at Cherry Beach also sounds good to me. Are you happening to head that way soon? Then definitely check out the Hot Docs Festival (from April 27 to May 7) for the coolest documentaries and the Kensington Krawl, a tour of Kensington Market.
Bangkok, Thailand
Yep, I know. Some people call Bangkok the sewer of Asia. I say those people are insane. I could easily spend a week in Bangkok. If you're not averse to a bit of hustle and bustle as a city girl, then you must have been here at least once in your life. The smells, the gigantic temple complexes like Wat Pho, the lovely people, the warmth, the stalls with street food... I now understand why so many backpackers start their journey here every year. One thing to keep in mind: in May it is really hot in Bangkok. But, eh, when isn't it actually? You're at the beginning of the rainy season, so there’s regularly a tropical shower in the afternoon to cool down.
New York, USA
Okay, okay, let's take a detour to a grand cliché city then. But only because the month of May is according to locals the perfect time to visit New York; the freezing cold is over, but the scorching heat is yet to come. The downside is the price for flights and hotels, because everyone wants to go to New York in May, but we'll just conveniently overlook that. And I know it's embarrassing (level Mr. Grey buttocks times ten at the very least), but I have NEVER been to New York. So in two weeks, I'm going with my mom on a mother/daughter trip. SO EXCITED. Just peeking at Carrie Bradshaw's house (May did it too), biking over the Brooklyn Bridge, slurping gin tonics in the coolest rooftop bars, taking selfies at the Statue of Liberty, the Yankees, Broadway shows, picnicking in Central Park; we will tackle all the touristy things that one must do in New York. More about this later, of course.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Maybe not the first city you think of for a city trip; I get it. And yet cool Copenhagen is definitely worth it. The city has a super relaxed creative vibe, cycling is seen as ultra-hip, and you find countless colorful houses to pimp your Insta. Sit down at one of the hundreds of relaxed coffee cafes, visit the world-famous Michelin-starred restaurant NOMA, and take a trip to the colorful hippie village of Christiana. And, are you a fan of Danish interior design? Then you can go wild here, you get that. And, extra bonus points for this city: wherever you are in Copenhagen, within thirty minutes you are at one of the many beaches. Also not bad: you can get there in 1.5 hours from Schiphol. So, will I see you there? Absolutely.
