WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND
By Theo Bakana
Hey you over there. Yes, you indeed. Nice to see you again. I hope you've made it through the week laughing, giggling, and roaring. If not and you're really ready for the coming days; no worries, I’m here to help. So uncork that bottle, call your girlfriend, mother, grandma, or Instacrush, because there's plenty to do.
Before you know it, you have a date
Since the most romantic day of the year is just around the corner (or well, that's how this day was labeled in the 14th century, the reason for that is a bit more gruesome than you might think. But anyway, I digress), it’s time again to make a thoughtful gesture towards your loved one. In the absence of the aforementioned, I have a solution for this. On Saturday, you can go to De Nieuwe Poort in Amsterdam . They are organizing a day where young people can go ‘on a date’ with older people who are usually a bit forgotten. Win-win-win, it seems to me. You have a date, you give someone a wonderful day, and wise advice from someone with more miles on the clock can never hurt.
The love-struck camera
If we are already in the romantic mood, you can head to the new exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam with your ‘before-you-know-it-date’ or home, garden, and kitchen hubby. The love-struck camera is an exhibition showcasing the work of Ed van der Elsken. This name may not ring a bell immediately, but I think his photos certainly will. Ed van der Elsken captured people as a street photographer in places like Paris, Amsterdam, and Hong Kong and created several iconic images. The Stedelijk now has the largest overview of his work in the world. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I’ll stop here, just go and take a look.
Pimp your room
Do you remember how Xzibit stood at the door and shouted “We’re gonna pimp your ride” with a thousand exclamation marks? There was also a Dutch variant for a while, namely ‘Pimp my room’. Yes, this really goes way back indeed. But you can do this this weekend. Especially if you go to the Kromhouthal in Amsterdam-Noord. Here this year Design Icons is taking place. What should you think of? Sixty furniture dealers showcasing their finest pieces of vintage furniture for you. And perhaps more importantly: a large part of the furniture you can also take home right away, provided you have paid for it nicely, of course.
Not so lazy Sunday
On Sunday, you can of course choose the traditional Sunday stroll, but you can also spice it up a bit by going to one of Elkes favorite hotspots. Here you can go straight from the Tipsy Tea Party at The Duchess (think: brunch, welcome cocktail, and a beautiful ambiance, it’s handy to make a reservation) to the Sunday Social at the W. This time it is hosted by Karen Rosetzsky, who has photographed for Vogue and Calvin Klein, among others. During the gathering, she will give you an exclusive preview of her new book ‘Young Love’ which will be available from Valentine’s Day. Speaking of the circle being complete…
And here’s a tip for next weekend
There will be a really fun party where I will be rehearsing a choreography for in the coming week. Namely the latest edition of komm schon Alter at Warehouse in Elementenstraat 25. Besides the good line-up and cool location, it’s extra fun that we can give away tickets here. So send your favorite choreography (or just your name and who you would like to go with, you must be 24 for this) to theo@amayzine.com and maybe I’ll see you there. Are you joining, Lilian? Then we’ll go in our matching outfit. Step, tap, two-three-clap. Step, tap, two-three…
Where will I meet you this week? And if you have tips, they are always welcome at theo@amayzine.com.
High Five!
