WHAT YOU SAY IN THE TALK WITH YOUR BROTHER OR SISTER

November 26, 2016. Some dates you just remember. The day the whole family gathered to my sister wave goodbye (a.k.a. scream very loudly) at Schiphol. It would be a trip to the other side of the world, starting in Australia with a little detour to Asia afterwards. For a maximum of a year.

I can tell you: a year usually flies by, but feels agonizingly long without your blood relation. Theoretically, she would come back in two months. But my sistah has the same travel gene as I do and in practice, it still seems like a good idea for her to go to New Zealand afterwards, maybe Tahiti. So the call was made. The ‘I know you were looking forward to it but I will probably stay away a little longer’ call. What do you want to say to her then? And what do you want to have said to your brother or sister at some point? This, among other things...

You are indispensable

A.k.a. I miss you. Because you play an important role in my life. No, I may not say that daily, but I definitely feel it weekly. Christmas without you is not the same at home. Making jokes about moms (internally also known as The Truudster isn't either.

Whatever you decide, I respect your choices

Even if you stay away for another six months, even if you come home as a lesbian, even if you dye your hair blue, even if you wear 15 denier tights every day (no okay, that last one is going too far); I'm here for you. We grew up in a family of women and you and mom taught me the most important life lessons. You are a fantastic person.

Just exactly for who you are. Positive, curious, busier than Bert Visscher in his time, but always the life of the party. As the little sister, I admire the steps you take in life. And thanks, huh, for leaving so many clothes behind that I still steal daily. Not much fits in such a backpack, huh? Hehe. #YouShouldJustNotGo

I will always be there for you

Wherever you live, no matter how far apart we are, I got your back, girl. People, your brother or sister deserves to know that you will always be there for him/her. Your family is the best ever.

Do what makes you happy.

You happy? I happy. Ultimately, we all live for ourselves and not to please others. As long as you Skype me weekly between the kangaroos, natives, or Tahitians and

bring back this kind of souvenirs, I'm all good. I love you No, maybe we don't say that often to each other. And that's why I want to say it, because I feel it abundantly. Dear Malou, enjoy with your boy on the other side of the world. I'll guard the fort in the meantime, unless I'm, eh, on the other side of the world myself, of course.

Bottom line of this emo story on a Sunday? No material goods can compete with the unconditional love of your family. They are the people you (hopefully) will have around you for the rest of your life and who shape you into who you are now. Alright, shall we all now quickly tell our brother and sister that they are awesome? Very good.
