Why going on a surprise trip is the best idea ever
Okay, I have landed again. Literally and figuratively. The past five days I was on the rollercoaster called Srprs.me. You know, going on a trip but having no idea where to. It had been on my fuck-it list for quite some time (the bucket list is passé, you should know) and if you've been saying for a few years that you really want to go to the airport to hear your destination on the spot, then you just have to do it.
So we did.
‘We’ in this case refers to my friend Lauren and me, and we chose the multi-city trip. Two European cities in five days. Why be surprised once when you can be surprised twice? So off we went to the airport. First landing in Lyon (France) and then flying to Rome in bella Italia. How was it? Freaking Amayzine, but more on that later. For now, I want to say: if you don't have plans for the summer yet, stop searching, stop reading reviews for hours, embrace the adventure and this new way of traveling, because it's amazing and you have to experience it at least once in your life. And here's why:
The anticipation
Anticipation is already the most fun, but you really get next-level butterflies when you don't know where you're going, I can tell you. And Srprs.me builds up the excitement nicely after booking, you know. After a confirmation email, you receive a link to your personal booking page with a countdown clock and the weather forecast for ‘your destination’. AAAAH, the control freak in me screams and the little child spins around.
Anticipation 2.0
One week in advance, the excitement really begins. You receive a scratch card and one or two black envelopes by mail that you must not open yet. Oh boy. Put a girl in a candy store and then tell her she can't eat anything... Only at the airport do you reveal the destination by scratching the code and entering it on your profile page on your phone.
Sit down & relax…
…because you don't have to prepare anything at all (okay, packing your bags is really the only thing). Normally, do you map out complete sightseeing routes? Well, don't do that now. Embrace the unknown, darling.
The moment of truth
Sounds really silly, but I felt my heart rate go up a few beats when we finally got to see the destination after weeks of speculation. And it was just as exciting with the second envelope (Rome).
For that unpredictable experience
Honestly, a surprise hits best when you have no expectations. The most beautiful things happen to you outside your comfort zone.
You bring out the child in yourself
Screaming and squealing in the car on the way to the airport, hop, with your little suitcase off to your destination, suddenly ending up in a totally different culture; it gives you a little flutter in your stomach. Check here by the way 15 other things that bring out the child in yourself.
And finally: it just sounds cool
A surprise trip has a certain brag factor. You should have seen the face of the taxi driver who dropped us off at the airport. When asked where we were going, we casually replied: ‘We don’t know haha, we’ll see at the airport.’
