Why you want to see IT

Horror movies are good for your relationship

IT by Stephen King was, in my opinion, the very first creepy movie I ever saw in my life during a sleepover when I was about twelve years old or so, and ever since I have had a terrible dislike for clowns – and for gutters along the side of the road. But when such a classic is remade and the reviews are also positive, then you go. And to make it a bit more bearable, you can always make sure there is a man around for the necessary distraction.

Research also shows that they are very good for your relationship. Look, you know the ‘cuddling closer to your partner’ when you are watching something scary, but did you know that watching a horror movie releases the same feel-good happiness hormone? ‘When you are scared, your brain releases dopamine, the same as when you are in love,’ says American anesthesiologist Michael Roizen. It also increases your heart rate and the serotonin hormone that is activated in your body when you are over the moon for someone. So after such a horror movie, you are likely to have a very cozy time in the bedroom.

Coincidentally also suffering from stress? Time to adjust your movie list. By watching horror movies often, you lower your stress level because they have a kind of calming effect (yes, really) on your body due to the adrenaline your body builds up at that moment. In fact, your brain gets a sort of vacation from the feeling of stress.

Long story short: are you currently experiencing a dip in your relationship? I would say: time for a horror marathon on Netflix. Couples who watch horror movies together, stay together. Or at least have more sex. Happy binging!
