10X why you should start watching the series The Handmaid’s Tale today
Suddenly, we are talking about nothing else but a war-torn US, the nightmare of clothing, a flap that you wouldn't believe, and besides that, we greet each other every morning with ‘Under his eye’. Okay, that last part is a joke, but seriously, there has never been so much talk about one single series in the past few days. We binge-watch ourselves silly, only to be able to watch a new episode every Thursday, attached to it a post-discussion from Amayzine. Guys, The Handmaid's Tale you have to see it. And right now, right now, right now for these reasons:
1. You are constantly on the edge of your seat because NO. NO. NO. This cannot be true. It is scary and thrilling, but certainly not in a horror way with lots of blood or uncharming creepers.
2. It is a unique story, unlike any movie or series you can compare it to.
3. It is so bizarre, yet at the same time so frightening, because somehow (strangely enough) it is quite realistic. A DVD of Friends, the latest Mercedes G-Class jeep, and a Tinder account amidst the clothing and media ban create a consciousness that you wouldn't believe. As old-fashioned as it seems, it is that contemporary.
4. The cast is amazing with Elisabeth Moss in the lead role, whom you might know from the series Mad Men and Top of the Lake. Furthermore, Alexis Bledel (yes, from Gilmore Girls), Joseph Fiennes (from American Horror Story), and Samira Wiley (Poussey in Orange Is the New Black) are also in it.
5. What happens when women in the future have no rights and are only seen as breeding machines? And what would you do in such a bizarre situation? One thing is for sure: you will never run out of things to say about this series.
6. From This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush to Consideration by Rihanna: the music is fantastic and amplifies every emotion in every situation tenfold.
7. The lighting, the locations, and especially the filter: the cinematography is absolutely top-notch.
8. The outfits look stunning. Every detail has been thought of, and the colors are perfectly coordinated, making the series super believable.
9. This is not a series to have on in the background. The environment, the war, the rights: The Handmaid’s Tale is a series that you will think about for a long time.
10. And of course the awards. The series won no less than eight Emmy Awards this year. Elisabeth won the award for Best Actress, Ann Dowd for Best Supporting Actress, and Alexis Bledel for Best Guest Actress. Furthermore, The Handmaid’s Tale was the first non-linear series to win the Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, Best Direction, and Best Writing. I mean… Do I need to say more?
