2018: the year of romantic comedies

Not a romantic comedy, but what is now high on my list to watch before it's early March again and we're dealing with the Oscars is Lady Bird. It's a film starring actress Saoirse Ronan in the lead role that already has a lot of Oscar buzz around it, just like the film. Call Me By Your Name, The only problem is: it won't be in theaters in the Netherlands until April, so I'll have to stream it somewhere – sorry, hopelessly impatient because I always want to see everything before the Oscars are awarded and not just a month later.

As far as films go, 2018 is really going to be the year of romantic stories, with of course Fifty Shades Freed as the kick-off. By the way, love is sought on screen, but also off screen, because if you haven't seen it yet: 2018 will be the year in which singles are all looking for l'amour.. Here are the films you can schedule for all those date nights.

The Leisure Seeker

This is already playing in our country and tells the story of Ella and John (Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland), who have had a particularly beautiful life together. However, they are both seriously ill now. They decide to go on one last adventure together in an old camper, leading to a hilarious yet sad journey for the married couple.

Every Day

I don't know if I would recommend this for your date night, it might be more fun to watch this with your girlfriends, but Every Day is about a girl who falls in love with someone who wakes up in a different body every day. It will be in theaters from February 22.

Annihilation

Another film that will be available from February 22 stars Natalie Portman. Annihilation is perhaps a bit more of a sci-fi story than a romantic film and is based on the bestseller by Jeff VanderMeer. It’s about a woman's (Natalie, of course) quest to find out what exactly happened to her husband who suddenly ended up in a hospital bed.

Red Sparrow

Move over James Bond, we’ve got Jennifer Lawrence. A film about a spy full of secret identities, lots of different disguises, intense action, and yes, a forbidden love. And you can see all of this in theaters starting March 1.

Love, Simon

You'll have to be patient for this one (until summer), because it won't be available until June, the story of Simon who struggles with coming out.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

The sequel to the beloved film from ten years ago finally comes out in July with even more romance than in the first film. We also see a lot of new faces, like actress Lily James, who plays the younger version of Meryl Streep in the film. And oh yes, special appearance by the living legend Cher. Can't wait.

A Star is Born

This is the debut of Lady Gaga who has her very first lead role alongside Bradley Cooper in a remake of a film about a country star from the sixties. Unfortunately, there is no trailer available yet, but it will be in theaters from October.
