The book you want to read now that it's 2018
I actually completely forgot about its existence until I came across an article about it in The New Yorker this week. How I ever came up with it, I don't remember so well, but in the summer of 2006, just before I was about to start my last year (senior year) of high school, I read it. It was written in 1968 about the year we are currently in: ’Toward the Year 2018‘ and contains predictions from various people who worked in the technology and science sectors. It thus told what their expectations of the world in fifty years were, so 2018.
It remains fun to see or read what kind of image people have of the future and in the case of this book, there have certainly been quite a few exaggerated predictions made, but still quite a lot that are indeed correct. For example, they talk about ‘pocket computers’, which is obviously what today's mobile phones are. If you can get your hands on it, then this is definitely worth reading if you're looking for something substantial to delve into. It's just a bit different from watching the movie ‘Back to the Future’, with a car that can travel through time.
One prediction that no one made was the prediction of the man who would one day become president of America. Logical of course, because no one knew of his existence fifty years ago. There's also some interesting reading about that: Fire and Fury, filled with plenty of revelations about Donald Trump. So, and that was it, my reading tips for Sunday morning. Happy weekend!
