The Battle: mobile versus paper planner
I still remember well that after high school I couldn't wait to buy an adult organizer: such an ultra-handy planner with space for notes, addresses, and a page per day to scribble on. For months, I saved for my ultimate version of Mulberry and every year at Christmas, I asked for new contents for the upcoming year. But then suddenly the mobile phone appeared, and my poor planner was unceremoniously pushed aside. Although there are plenty of enthusiasts who still prefer paper over digital, and with the new year around the corner (and all the crazy new organizers I see coming by), I suddenly start to doubt: should I go back to the old familiar paper? I would like to list the pros and cons for both versions:
Advantages
Paper
- By physically writing down appointments with a pen, you remember them much better right away.
- How wonderful is it to cross off or check off your to-do list point by point?
- If you get bored during that dull meeting, you can (just like before) kill time by drawing silly figures and little characters in your planner.
Disadvantages
- If you want to quickly look something up, you usually end up flipping back a bit. Let alone when you want to look something up from over a year ago (if you've even kept the previous years).
- Such an organizer is quite a weight that you lug around in your bag.
- You have to personally copy all appointments into your partner's planner, because you can bet he won't listen when you mention them, let alone write them down.
Advantages
Phone
- You don't always have your planner on hand, but you do have your phone so you can immediately note an appointment.
- You can easily find all your appointments by name or date.
- You can synchronize your planner with your partner, work relationships, family, etc. This way, I see all the different agenda items very clearly by color, and as soon as someone changes something, my planner synchronizes immediately. This has literally saved my marriage multiple times (because all women know that men don't always clearly communicate their agenda, or actually never do…).
Disadvantages
- You don't have one handy and clear app to note and view notes and appointments for one day.
- Eventually, you simply forget how to hold a pen, let alone how to write a correct complete sentence.
- If your battery is dead, you immediately lose access to all your appointments.
