De terugkeer van de midi
Fashion says midi, but how do you combine this longer skirt length so that it stays far away from a frumpy image?
There are trends that I gladly and happily let pass me by, especially if they are a repetition from an earlier period in my active fashion life. Not falling again on too high platform soles, for example, not getting a bladder infection from too short skirts (aside from the fact that it’s obviously not a good look at my age), but for midi I’m happy to make an exception.
Because if you look at the runway reviews and the Instagram pictures of the most important influencers, you can't have missed it: we are massively embracing midi, the just-over-the-knee-to-just-above-the-ankle-bone skirt length. This is not the first time this trend has appeared, but like all hypes that make a comeback, it is worn according to standards that reflect the prevailing fashion image.
The do’s and don’ts to make midi look its best:
- Various designers embrace the seventies with models made in classic tweed. Because this material can come across as a bit stiff, I recommend sexy pumps with a thin, high heel for a nice balance. If you want to emphasize the seventies feel, combine the length with long boots with a sturdy heel.
- The wide pleated skirt was already extensively in the spotlight last season and it looks like the success continues. For a solid version, I advise you to use color blocking as a combination option. So choose colors that match each other in a surprising way (like rust brown, ice blue, and fresh olive green) or choose different shades from the same color group when selecting your top, shoes, and accessories for a more sophisticated look.
- If you’re not very tall and want to appear taller, I recommend opting for the just-over-the-knee length or a model with an asymmetrical hem that shows a bit more of your leg and thus gives the illusion of longer legs.
- Most models you see now have volume and fall smoothly around your body. In all cases, the midi length looks best when the waistline is visible . So choose blouses that you tuck into your skirt or tops that end at your waist. Avoid oversized tops unless you choose a fitted, body-hugging skirt.
- Although sneakers may be an important fashion statement for most of us, I prefer shoes or ankle boots with a heel for this length because it emphasizes the femininity of the look. If you’re going for a more casual appearance, sneakers are of course a great option.
- I don’t know how you feel about it, but I postpone the moment when tights are pulled out of the closet for as long as possible. Preferably I wear midi with bare legs. Just because the length already covers so much, it increases the appeal of seeing a little bit of skin.
- For a jacket with this length, choose a short model. Think of a bomber style or a denim jacket. If you choose a longer model, prefer one that is a bit more oversized: a seven-eighths length inspired by men's jackets or a length halfway down the calf in sturdy tweed or teddy.
According to Coco Chanel, a woman's knees are the most unattractive part of the body. For her, that’s all the reason to cover them.
