Love & Sex

Does rebound sex really help against a broken heart?

Your heart is in pieces and you don't know how you can possibly go another second without him. As a tip, your friends tell you: casually dive into bed with someone else.

Alright, that can work. Dress on, breasts out, and into that pub. Does that help? What does science say about the phenomenon of rebounding? Well, rebound sex isn't such a bad plan at all. If you feel insecure, unattractive and sad about the break-up, it can really lift your spirits to start a fling with a half-stranger. Because: it gives you back your self-confidence. You perk up from it. You feel good. Appreciated. It also feels more like everything will be alright with you – you'll find a new guy eventually. This is the first little step.

We actually do it quite often, rebounding. At least 35 percent of people sleep with someone else within a month after the breakup. Just for fun. It's something nice, you feel good, you feel seen and appreciated again. Don't worry too much about the negative consequences, you really won't suddenly miss your ex more if you share the sheets with someone else. You often feel even prettier and definitely prettier than your ex. You doubt less about yourself. And you need that, especially if you've just been dumped by your old love, who has been trampling on your ego. Now your ego is back, because Mr. Fireworks in Bed is here to take care of that. He kisses you with the passion you missed. He looks at you as if he has never seen such an amazing body. That's a gift for yourself. Ha.

But if you want to take it a bit easier; exercising, going to a spa or eating with friends can also help you get over the ludduvuddu. Celebrate a party with your buddies. Especially don't check his Instagram. Drink that extra gin and tonic, even if you're at home on the couch and oh, let your sadness be for a moment. Sooner or later, a rebound will really come, even if you think it won't in the first few days. And maybe even a really, really fun one. And away goes that whole broken heart.
