Having friends at work is good for you

Girlfriends

Eventually, you end up spending about 1334 hours in the office in one year. Sounds good, right?

Young women work an average of 29 hours per week, men 37 hours. With a few vacation weeks included, you quickly find yourself at that same desk with those same people next to you for 1334 hours. Do you work full-time, so 40 hours a week? With those five weeks of vacation days, you easily rack up 1880 hours in a year. In short: it doesn't hurt to have a nice chat here and there, because you colleagues you see more often than your family, friends, or sometimes even your partner.

Working people with some good friends at work are happier and work better. They experience less stress because they know they can rely on their colleagues when things get tough. You also work more motivated: you really don't want to leave this team, so you give it your all. And you have a 40 percent higher chance of a promotion if you have friends in your team. As a boss, you'd better want everyone to get along, because a team full of buddies with the same interests works better than a team full of strangers.

By the way, it's quite amusing to see that we increasingly value having a pleasant atmosphere at work. We are happy to trade a high salary for some freedom and some real friendship. We prefer to work somewhere that makes us happy rather than somewhere that makes us rich. A nice Christmas thought, right?
