Iceland: a country to fall head over heels in love with
Justin Bieber in your ear: ‘I’ll show you. Tu tududududuuu, tudududuuuu.’ Do you know the clip? Yes, right? If not, then you must watch this before you can read further. this I was obsessed with that video for years. When I heard that the entire scene took place in Iceland, I knew: I have to go there at least once in my life.
That moment came sooner than expected. I returned last Sunday from my second trip to Iceland and would spontaneously like to add a number 3 to see even more. Now, you might not think of a country with the word ‘ice’ in it for your summer vacation right away. I get it. And yet, not really. It’s actually not that icy at all. Green even. Why lie on the same beach chair every year when you can explore the world? Why go skiing every time when you can spot glaciers? To feel like you’re alive? That’s what I mean. Iceland is the shit. Five compelling reasons to book that ticket now.
The flight
Flying with Icelandair is already a party in itself. The flight attendants, the food (pretty good for airplane food), the seats, headphones; everything. Strangely enough, people think you’re on the plane for a long time because Iceland sounds seriously far away, but it’s only three hours. And I don’t say this often, but that was almost a shame. If it’s not too cloudy, you have the most spectacular view ever.
The divine food
And especially: the fish. Salmon, wolf fish, halibut, cod: super fresh at every restaurant you step into. I didn’t know what I was experiencing. By the way, these are my favorite spots for good food in Reykjavik.
The Blue Lagoon
You probably know it from the travel brochures: the lagoon with geothermally heated seawater in the heart of a lava field. Bucket list material? Absolutely. Insta worthy? Also. Have a drink, put a mud mask on your face, and enjoy. Just a tip from me: slather a shitload of conditioner in your hair and especially don’t let that bun down if you want to keep your soft locks.
The most handsome man on earth lives in Iceland
Hundreds of thousands of women are hysterically in love with Rúrik Gíslason and I’m one of them. Fun fact: before the World Cup, he had ‘only’ 40 thousand followers, and in two weeks, he went viral because of his looks and shot up to 1.1 million.
But above all: the natural beauty
Nature is at its wildest in Iceland: from bubbling mud pools to impressive waterfalls and towering geysers. The waterfalls where everyone takes their photos? Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, and Gulfoss. Dyrholaey lighthouse viewpoint is one to remember, just like the colored mountains in Landmannalaugar, the ice lakes in Jokulsarlon, and the ‘black beach’ of Vik. Oh, and there’s so much more. Ice-to-the-land, when do we meet again? I’m looking forward to it.
P.S. Did you know that Iceland is the very first country in the world where employers are required to pay men and women the same for the same work? They aim to close the wage gap completely by 2022. That’s it. I’m packing my bags, bye bye!
