Read this and suddenly you feel very old

I turn twenty-nine this year. For the first time, I’m a bit shocked by this, because it means that thirty is really lurking around the corner and I’m not ready for it. I almost don’t dare to admit it, but sometimes I really miss my high school days a lot. When I was still a spoiled child and all the important things in life were taken care of by my parents. Becoming an adult (read: tax stuff and other fixed costs); I’d prefer to postpone it a bit longer. Just the other week, I stumbled upon an article that made that nostalgia for the past even worse, because life ten years ago seemed so much simpler. Do you all still remember this from 2008?

MySpace

Or Hyves. I didn’t use the latter, but MySpace was still quite popular in 2008. Yes, Facebook already existed, I even had an account, but MySpace was still in. Especially your background was important, the top eight people in your list that were visible on your homepage, and of course what music you were playing when people landed on your page. We could actually call it the big sister of Instagram.

The Hills & The City

Your life actually revolved completely around that of Lauren Conrad. Whether things would ever get better with Heidi or not, the relationship between Justin Bobby and Audrina… Then Whitney also got her own spin-off called The City, which also had to be followed on foot. I mean: Olivia Palermo was in it. And Kelly Couture. So good.

Beyoncé

One thing that hasn’t changed in those ten years is the popularity of The Queen. What everyone was really into in 2008 was Single Ladies. And still is, actually.

Lady Gaga

But another lady who just became a bit known in the music world back then was Lady Gaga. Also the lady responsible for the then so popular hairband made of her.

Twilight

The moment when almost all the ladies on our planet (teenagers and adults included) fell in love with Robert Pattinson. Vampires and werewolves suddenly became hot, after which a lot of other series followed with the same kind of theme. All Twilight movies are actually on Netflix, if you feel like a nostalgic evening.

Kanye West, the sunglasses man

He probably will never wear such a thing again, but those crazy plastic glasses with names like ‘Shutter Shades’ were totally in thanks to the rapper.

Blackberry Messenger

I don’t think WhatsApp even existed back then. Everyone was walking around with Blackberries and it was the most normal thing in the world to ask someone for their ping to chat with each other.
