The question everyone is asking today
And which makes me feel a bit uncomfortable
It's Friday. And you can bet that this question will be asked. I ask it myself, by the way. All the time. “So, are you doing anything fun this weekend?”
I have the feeling that people expect earth-shattering adventures. Something along the lines of: “I start Friday evening by attending a performance at the Martha Graham Theatre in the City Theatre, on Saturday we go early morning fishing in the North Sea, in the late afternoon we are invited to the residence for a drink with the French ambassador and on Sunday I fly early to Milan so that I am on time for brunch at the Diana Majestic and I have the whole afternoon to open the invites for the shows.”
In reality, it goes like this: I lie down in our big bed at the same time as my children. Or I funnel them through the process called bath, teeth brushing, and pajamas and drape them next to us on the couch. Fireplace on, glass filled and then watch The Voice, or Grace and Frankie or, if they have been very sweet, Dik Trom and then collectively fall asleep. On Saturday we are freezing at 9:00 AM at the puppy training in Spaarndam (and I have already been there for three hours because the puppy doesn't have such a big bladder yet), we have breakfast with everything on it and then we move on to dance mix. While the girls are moving, we do our round of favorite cheese shop, bakery, and toy store for something nice under ten euros. Then I watch the snack time and the situation from Friday repeats itself.
Sunday is Sunday. Walking in the woods, lying on my stomach on a big pillow reading the supplements of the newspapers, spending hours thinking about where we will go on vacation and still not figuring it out by the end of the day, tidying up the house a bit, doing laundry, vacuuming, mopping, maybe someone will drop by and then just be very happy.
But that, I never dared to say. Until I heard today that ‘doing nothing’ is suddenly cool. Haha. Suddenly I find myself right in the middle of where it happens. So bring on your question. I'm ready for it.
