This is how you survive the cold during your workout

During lunch, I was asked if I also sports work out when there is a blanket of snow. Well, what should I say to that? With these winter temperatures, you will see me a bit less in the Vondelpark and a bit more inside the four walls of the gym, but for a change, I still make some kilometers outside every now and then to then crawl under a much too warm shower.

During these cold days, it is important to keep your muscles warm, otherwise they can tear or you will have incredible muscle pain the next day. Are you like me, always cold, but not a fan of the gym? Below are some tips for a good workout outside in the cold. So, yet another excuse less.

  • Always make sure your wrists, ankles, and ears are warm. Then your whole body is warm.
  • Wear running gloves. They are just warm enough to avoid frozen fingers, but still comfortable. Plus: if you get tired of them, you can just put them in your pocket.
  • Work with layers and don’t bundle up too much. A long-sleeved shirt with a fleece vest over it is sufficient.
  • You can quickly overheat, and you don’t want that.
  • Always make sure you can take off a layer and tie it around your waist.
  • Trouble with cold ears? Go for a headband instead of a beanie. If your ears are warm, the rest is warm too.
  • The cold gear pants from Under Armour are highly recommended. They breathe but also keep the cold out.
  • Make sure you are visible when you go out in the dark. Some jackets have reflective stripes on the sleeve, but a light on your ankle also helps a lot.
  • Choose shoes with grip; if it’s slippery or there’s a flake of snow, you’ll be safe.
