This is the secret of Meryl Streep's mega-long marriage
7x what we can learn from her
When you talk about actresses who really know their craft, you're actually talking about the 68-year-old Meryl within three seconds. Because come on, how many are there like her?
Exactly: not so many. She has already won three Oscars – and rightly so. But what she is also very good at, it turns out, is maintaining a marriage. She has been married to her love Don Gummer for forty years this year. Forty years. In Hollywood, that counts as about eighty years together, believe us. In 1978, she said ‘yes’ to Don and she is still madly in love with her sculptor and their four children.
We all find this too cool about Meryl and yes, we can learn a lot from her:
- Just be yourself, in whatever area. Whatever you do, how cool you are, and how rich you may be; nobody cares a bit. As long as you are just a nice and kind person, only then do you have a fulfilling life. Meryl doesn't live in New York – she doesn't need all that fuss and being seen. That's cool.
- Work hard. Success doesn't come out of thin air and even if you get it from mom and dad: work for yourself. For your own satisfaction. Put yourself on the map and do things you are good at. Only then can you break through. If you have a job that just doesn't fit you for too long, you'll never make it.
- Stay loyal. She has supported her husband through all the turbulent times and they have never let each other down. She always puts her family in the number one spot. She said when she won an Oscar for Best Actress in The Iron Lady: ‘Everything I value most in my life, you give me, Don.’
- Don't take life too seriously. Laugh a little more often. Flirt with the construction worker on the street. Don't spend half an hour in front of the mirror judging your outfit. Come on, hang those streamers and enjoy what you have.
- Meryl has been through a lot. She was once with actor John Cazale (1935-1978), but he got lung cancer at a young age and passed away after they had only been together for a year.
- She has so much style. And more importantly, her own style.
- The secret to a successful marriage? Meryl: ‘Just keep flirting a little. It does you good. And besides, you have to adjust a bit in the relationship: it's give and take. So sometimes you just say ‘yes’. And sometimes just keep your mouth shut.’
