Want to see: Unbelievable on Netflix

2 ladies leaning against a wall, they look serious

Just a few days on Netflix and already scoring an 8.7 on IMDb, then you're doing well as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, this is my go-to site to see if a series or movie is worth watching. The new series Unbelievable has passed with flying colors. It has eight episodes, each about three quarters of an hour long. Quite a bit of ’viewing pleasure' then. I put it in quotes because this series is guaranteed to get under your skin.

In that sense, you can compare it to When They See Us. Excellent, but so frustrating and it makes you so angry. Unbelievable is, just like When They See Us, based on a true story, which makes it all the more intense. This story was previously told in the article An Unbelievable Story of Rape, which won a Pulitzer Prize. You immediately know where the title comes from and what it's about.

Marie Adler is the main character in this series, a teenager who reports a rape by a man who broke into her home. A traumatic experience in itself, but the police see it differently... They don't believe her. Excuse you? Yes, really. In the end, even her stepmother doubts her story. The police manage to manipulate Marie so much that she retracts her story and is convicted of giving false statements.

That kind of injustice in series and films, I just can't stand it. Really a case of shouting at the screen. How is that possible?! Miles away, thank goodness (there are still good people in the world), there are two detectives who do believe Marie's story and, what's more: see a connection with previous rape cases.

A very impressive series, not exactly light on the stomach but absolutely one you don't want to turn off. It's bizarre to imagine that it often really goes like this: women who are not believed after something like this has happened to them. Brave enough to report it and then treated like this by the police. It's disgusting. Hopefully, this series will go as far as When They See Us.
