If the whole country gets involved in an affair

While chaos breaks out in Turkey. I just want to say that. Besides the family on a farm in Drenthe and Erdogan pulling all sorts of stunts, the Borsato kids were just shy of world news. Although it apparently kept people quite busy.

A short and concise explanation: Marco had a rocky relationship with pianist Iris Hond, Leontine and Marco got over it, it was ten (!) years ago. End of story, you would think, right? Not really, because Marco, Leontine, and the affair were splashed across the pages of the newspaper. The two could have chosen to deny everything, which would have been their right because it’s nobody’s business, of course, but they didn’t. The Borsato’s came with a statement that said more than I think was necessary.

We have never hidden the fact that the bankruptcy at that time took a heavy toll on us, both professionally and personally (as discussed in the documentary “Marco Borsato, Meer Dan Ik Alleen”). At that time, about ten years ago, there was indeed a friendship that went further than I had anticipated. However, this situation was of very short duration. Leontine and I did sometimes lose ourselves and each other during that time, but fortunately, we never truly lost each other. The realization of how much we love each other and the critical self-reflection has made us, after a marriage of now 22 years, stronger than ever. However, we see this as a private matter and would appreciate it if our privacy and that of our children are respected in this.

What a statement. What a marriage. What a woman Leontine is. What a man Marco is. My stomach turns a bit for the children, because you don’t want the neighbor, your math teacher, and a yoga instructor to know that things weren’t going well between mom and dad. Ten, I repeat ten years ago. On Insta, the hearts are meanwhile going back and forth. A statement here, a sweet response there, some reposts. And now we can focus again on the nitrogen situation of the farmers, the Brexit agreement, the impending Code Yellow, and let’s not bombard Iris Hond with nasty comments on Instagram.
