Rally your tallest friends for this Netflix movie

A girl looking at her laptop at a screen with Netflix on it about the new movie tallgirl

Thought you had seen all the categories on Netflix: there's another one coming, you know. I always have a laugh at the vague category names they manage to come up with. To name a few: ‘Series with rave reviews set in New York’, ‘Binge-worthy series about psychological manipulation’ and ‘Series with strong female acting performances’. Really, who comes up with those categories? In any case, very specific. Well, who knows, maybe soon there will be ‘Romantic comedy with a tall female lead’. We can expect that from September 13.

The film with the obvious title Tall Girl is about Jodi, a girl who is 186 centimeters tall. That's about 20 centimeters taller than I am, but I am small (but nice). Two of my girlfriends are around 180 centimeters, and I often affectionately call them ‘long limbs’. They don't really mind their height (and why would you?), but Jodi finds it quite difficult. It doesn't really help that her sister Harper seems to have it all: a ‘better’ height and a beautiful body.

But then a taller, handsome exchange student appears on the scene. It wouldn't be a romcom if that didn't lead to love, of course. But not without some bumps along the way, and Jodi first undergoes a makeover from her sister. Pretty boy, the exchange student, likes her for who she is, regardless of her height. A little predictable? Certainly. A delightful escape? Oh, ab-so-lutely. I love these kinds of movies where you don't have to think and know from the first two seconds that it will have a guaranteed happy ending.

So plan a long date with your tallest friend, open that bottle of wine, and grab the popcorn. We won't see this film at the Oscars (maybe at the Razzies?), but I already find it a delightful feel-good movie just from watching the trailer.
