On this date, the final season of Orange is the New Black is released

2019, the year of many new Netflix series, but also the year in which we have to say goodbye to a number of all-time favorites. Have you just recovered from the Game of Thrones finale (honestly: I don't watch it, so I'm mostly just glad that everyone finally isn't talking about it constantly anymore), soon the last season of Orange is the New Black will start. And I do watch that. A bit bittersweet, because it has been nice but it could have lasted seven seasons long. Fortunately, there are plenty of other series to fill this gap. And that gap is coming, on July 26.
We could already prepare for it a bit: at the end of last year they already announced that this would really be the very last season. And yeah, I kind of saw it coming actually. Without spoiling too much, the events in season 6 already hinted at this. Very nice is the trailer they released last night, in which we see all the main characters doing a musical outing. They all sing ‘You've got time’, which has been the theme song throughout the series. And I fear I won't get it out of my head today. You can check it out below.
But what can we expect a bit from the very last season? It will of course revolve around Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), who is no longer in prison but is a free bird. And she has to get used to that, especially since all her friends are still behind bars. More than that is not clear yet, but it will definitely be enjoyable again.
Just a final warning: the creators of OITNB already warned that it won't be a happy ending for everyone. Oh, nooo. The actress who plays Red said (in case you hadn't noticed: spoilers ahead): “I know how it ends and it's sad.” But Daya is also not exactly looking forward to a rosy future. “Unfortunately, that's not the realistic view,” that actress said about it. Now OITNB is always praised for being so realistic, but a happy ending should be possible, right? Come on?
If you have become a real fan of the orange jailbirds, definitely read the book by Piper Kerman, on which the series is based. She wrote her memoirs in the eponymous book and I really found it a recommendation. I often find myself in the book vs. movie/series discussion, although Orange is the New Black has done surprisingly well. Anyway, this is the book you want to read when you're lying on the beach this summer.
I almost forgot to end with very hopeful news; a spin-off of Orange is the New Black is still something that is being talked about. Fingers crossed.
