People are leaving the cinema after the new Joker

Lyrical I was about it, about the trailer of the new Joker movie. Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker seemed to me a perfect fit. And the trailer was also very dark, a bit disturbing, but I was captivated. And I was sure: I am definitely going to catch this in the cinema. Well, it's in the cinema now and the reactions are... intense. That's actually the only word that describes it well.
On NU.nl there is even a quote from Gordon that he walked out of the theater because he couldn't handle all the violence in the film. Now, Gordon is anything but a film critic, so I did a bit more research. And yes, it turned out that a whole lot of people walked out with Gordon (who, by the way, was enthusiastic about the acting performances). He would be too disturbing, indeed contain too much violence and at times insane. But all reviews agree on one thing: he is also just insanely good.
Five stars, four stars: the reviewers (except for Gordon) are very positive. And disturbing films, well, you have to love them, but I absolutely do. I do think that it is not for the faint-hearted and/or sensitive souls (but that's fine too), so consider this a warning. If you really love that, like I do, this is one you don't want to miss.
Heath Ledger was the absolute Joker before this film, but I predict (and I am also anything but a film critic, let me make that clear — but a huge fan) that this is going to be a strong contender for the Oscars. Holy shit, I thought that already with the trailer. That Joaquin Phoenix is just the Joker.
By the way, creator Todd Philips wants to incorporate a current social issue into the film. What happens to someone when they are rejected by all layers of society and actually don't get a fair chance in life? Yes, grim. So a (anti)superhero movie also becomes a current discussion point. But Volkskrant, NRC, NU.nl, FilmTotaal, actually all sites and sources except for Gordon agree: You. Want. To. See. This. And otherwise you go with Gordon to Frozen 2, also very nice.
