So you feel sexy. Decide to take a few exciting photos. Send them to your new boyfriend. And a year later you receive that same photoshoot in your mailbox, with kind regards from a stranger. ‘Hey, I got all your pics and videos.’ The ground falls out from under your feet. You have to hold on to not wobble. It's disgusting.
How many women have been in trouble over the past year because they were hacked? Honestly: have you ever sent a sexy photo to someone? In hindsight, you always know that it’s not smart, but I mean: it’s your own phone, right? Is that really such a naive thought? In this day and age: apparently. Passwords are for sale in China and Russia for a few bucks, and if you have a recognizable face, the chance that creeps want to ruin you is about 100 percent. Just like with Disney actress Bella Thorne. A hacker managed to steal compromising material from her and then blackmailed her to make everything public. The horror of every woman.
What do you do then? Crying in a corner. At least, that’s what I would do. But Bella chose the toughest path possible. ‘In the last 24 hours I have been threatened with my own nude photos,’ she writes on Twitter. ‘I feel dirty, I feel watched, I feel like someone has taken away what I wanted to share with a special person.’ She then posts several screenshots of the topless photos. Of herself, yes. ‘Fuck you and the power you think you have over me. I’m done. I’m posting this on Twitter because it’s my own decision, now you can’t take anything away from me. I will sleep better tonight, knowing that I have taken back your power over me. You cannot control my life.’
Phew. You can't receive a thicker middle finger as a hacker, I think. And Bella: Jesus, what a tough woman you are. Sad that it had to happen at all, but a deep bow for this action. And let it be a lesson, dear ladies (and gents): your life can be destroyed in the blink of an eye with one snapshot.
