Staying home on Saturday night is the new going out

Embrace that ‘joy of missing out’, because spending an evening at home on your couch scrolling through Netflix does more good than you might expect.

A Saturday night at the pub: nice and all, but it doesn't have to be every week. In fact, you should just schedule those boring evenings at home. Mark them off in your calendar. Because it's particularly good for your mood. First of all, you save money and energy. You don't have to bike anywhere through the pouring rain and cold; you can just plop down and lounge around. And you recharge from it. Going out and wandering through the city, not so much. You really feel a lot fitter on Monday if you've taken a little time for yourself over the weekend.

But do we actually do it, that's the question. Hanging out in your living room is also called that. Staying home is totally hip. The fact that there are no clear numbers on people who prefer to stay home rather than hang out at the pub makes it hard to measure who all chooses that life in bed instead of at the bar. But there are other facts. For instance, the number of cafes in the Netherlands has decreased by 13 percent in recent years. Also, about 200 nightclubs have had to close their doors in our country in recent years. 139 million people worldwide have a subscription to Netflix. Of those, there are certainly 2.3 million Dutch people, just saying. Bye pub, hello binge life.

What makes lounging on the couch particularly popular now is that it's socially accepted. What did you do this weekend? ‘Oh, watched season two of Riverdale, you?’ It's not weird to hear something like that anymore. In fact, everyone understands it. That time for yourself, relaxing in your pajamas on the couch is necessary. Besides the fact that we binge-watch, shops and dates are also easily accessible online. So you don't have to leave the house to flirt with some hot guy or to score those new boots. You can see them on Tinder and on the Zara app. And if we do go out, with heels, with hair in the straightener, with makeup on (the effort it takes), then preferably a little peaking around six or seven in the evening. Going to bed drunk at ten – that way you can still enjoy your free Sunday. Well, it's a trend and there's no escaping it. A mibo is still quite doable, but a late-night drink... Nobody feels like that.

‘What did you do this weekend?’ ‘Oh, went to a pub until six in the morning and omg, I was so hungover and then I went to a club on Saturday with my hangover, and it was four in the morning when I went to bed.’ Tsss, amateur. So not cool.
