The places in Mallorca you want to know

mallorca

When you think of the Balearics, you probably first think of Ibiza. Understandable, it is also a very beautiful and fun island, but let's not forget Mallorca. A bit larger, but with just as many beautiful spots, restaurants, cities, and beaches. So don't immediately think of places like Magaluf and El Arenal, Mallorca is much more than that and definitely worth a (mid)week getaway. Believe me: I was always eager to just go back to Ibiza, but you won't regret a holiday to Mallorca. Check out these nice addresses to make that trip a success.

About Palma: I found this a nice base to explore the island, renting a car is recommended in Mallorca – just like in Ibiza. The historic center of Palma is largely car-free, so it's ideal for walking through. You'll also find many nice boutiques here and of course the large cathedral. And not just any cathedral, designed in part by Gaudí, and the rose window of 11.5 meters wide is one of the largest in the world. If you want the most beautiful view of the city, take a trip to Castell de Bellver, which is about three kilometers from Palma. And if you want to completely escape the hustle and bustle, book a nice Airbnb in Deià. One of the most beautiful villages in all of Spain, I dare say.

Abaco

This is a cocktail bar in the capital Palma that you don't want, no, correction, must not miss. A very special interior, but the real eye-catcher here is the indoor garden, complete with a fountain and classical music in the background. So not a trendy place, but very popular among the locals and one of my favorite spots in this city to have a drink in the evening. Warning: it's a bit tricky to find, it's right in the city, but hidden behind large wooden doors.

Abaco: Calle San Juan 1

Ombu

Tapas and cocktails at a high level at this very nice spot in the old center of Palma. The tapas here are just a bit different, with many Eastern influences, such as Japanese oysters, tuna tataki, and bao buns. But no worries, they also have patatas bravas, burrata, and Iberico ham. Absolutely a must-try if you're with a group because believe me: you want to order the whole menu here. But if you're with just two, definitely try to score a cute table on the mini balcony. Romantic dinner guaranteed.

Ombu: Passeig del Born 5-7

Cafe Toni

You can hardly get more Spanish than this. The tastiest hams, suckling pigs, and lamb. Be sure to try the sobrasada when you're in Mallorca, a spicy, spreadable sausage that comes from Mallorca. It's also nice to take back to the Netherlands for during happy hour (as I did). From the terrace, it's also nice to people-watch.

The most beautiful beaches

As I mentioned at the beginning, Mallorca also has many beautiful beaches, some less discovered than others. Check out the most beautiful beaches below, which are definitely worth a road trip.

Es Trenc, Calo des Moro-Santanyí, Cala d’en Borgit, Cala Figuera, Cala Varques

If you're looking for ultimate relaxation and want to leave the city behind, you can also head to the east of Mallorca. For example, to Cala Figuera, which the locals also call ‘little Venice’ because of the small houses by the water. It's a real fishing village and still relatively undiscovered by tourists. But now it is by you and me. Cala Figuera has no beach, but with a car, you can easily get to the beautiful beach Es Trenc.

Deià

A bit further north, you will find the mountain village of Deià. It is known as an artists' village and has a nice beach where you can easily spend a day or two. Deià is not completely undiscovered (anymore), apparently none other than Beyoncé spent her vacation here last year and Kate Moss is said to be a regular here. With a population of 700 people, the chance is high that you find yourself among the stars. Furthermore, the number of tourists is still quite manageable.

Sa Fonda

And those stars, you will find them here. At first glance, a bar like many others, with authentic Spanish food and homemade sangria. But you can also dance here late into the night (and Bey and Kate Moss have done just that at this spot). Additionally, Sa Fonda is located on a narrow mountain road and has views of the forests and the Puig des Teix mountain, where Deià is situated. Ultimate holiday feeling.

Ca’s Patro March

The most beautiful view of all of Deià, perhaps even of all of Mallorca, you have at this seafood restaurant. The terrace is almost on the water and they serve the freshest fish. Come early – because you want to sit here as long as possible. And of course, catch the sunset too. It's not big, but very popular, so keep this a well-kept secret for now.

Finca Son Mico

In case you haven't noticed: Mallorca, and especially Deià, is ideal for (long) walks. I personally enjoy a walk, especially when it is well rewarded. And for that, you are in the right place at Finca Son Mico. This place is run by two French sisters in an old farmhouse on top of a hill. Expect homemade pastries and fresh juices here. And yes, that view. Take me back to Deià please. And if you're walking, be sure to also visit museum Son Marroig at the end of the day. There is also a restaurant, and you have certainly earned a good glass of wine.

Finca Son Mico: Ma-10, 70, 07100 Sóller

Son Marroig: Diseminado Valldemossa Cr 13

Xelini Restaurante

Delicious tapas, beautiful terrace, with live music in the background, what more could you want? The location here is super, and even better: you can also stay overnight. They have two accommodations, the Villa and the Loft. It may cost a bit, but waking up here is very nice.

Xelini restaurante: Carrer Arxiduc Luís Salvador, 19

I don't know about you, but I'm already quite in the summer mood with all these nice addresses. A week in Mallorca is hereby in the planning. Not all at once please, then it still seems just as undiscovered. Let's send the other tourists to Magaluf and El Arenal, just as easy. Wow, we're going to Mallorca. New summer hit of 2019? Count me in.
