Time for a movie night: these 6 films you want to see in theaters this week

shot from the sun is also a star cinema film

Yes, it's Friday and that means of course just weekend. Very nice, although I'm a bit apprehensive about tonight. Just when the trees have been somewhat cleared from the gigantic storm on Wednesday night (and the 35203 Instagram Stories with the filmed thunder are gone), it's time again tonight. Great then. Those terrace plans literally fall into the water. I can't think of a better excuse to just stay inside, so a movie night is a great alternative. If you have your time management a bit under control, you might be able to catch two in one night (which also means more popcorn and that's always good), because there are seriously quite a few fun movies playing in the cinema. Anyway, there are already six films worth watching. It's also something different than Netflix on the couch, right?

1. Aladdin

Yes, that was of course to be expected. I must admit that I am even more enthusiastic about The Lion King (especially with the latest footage, where we actually see the characters talking – hi Beyoncé), but this remake has also turned out quite well. My heart still aches a bit for Robin Williams, so Will Smith was definitely an adjustment, but overall I certainly give him a passing grade. Mainly actually because of Jasmine. I won't spoil anything, but they did change a thing or two in the story. She's also stunning, with a voice I'm jealous of. Oh yes, and Abu of course. Besides Jasmine, the monkey was the best part of the film.

2. Rocketman

Another film that was eagerly awaited. Bohemian Rhapsody was of course the hit of last year and it gave a bit of a starting signal for the biopics of artists. In Rocketman, Elton John is in the spotlight. Call me naive, but I really didn't expect that man to be so into drugs (and sex). He was really a bit of a rascal back in the day. Unfortunately, singing along in the cinema is still not socially accepted (I tested that with Bohemian Rhapsody too, it wasn't appreciated), but that Sir Elton John secretly has quite a few great hits. And a tumultuous life, that's for sure.

3. Hotel Mumbai

For when you're in the mood for a somewhat more serious (actually quite intense) film. It tells the true story of 2008, when a group of Pakistani terrorists armed invaded the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. The heroic actions of the police also play a big role in it. As I said: an intense film but definitely a recommendation. I can still remember this event, but this paints a very different picture than a news article. With Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name) in the lead roles, so that's definitely a plus.

4. Yesterday

So fun. This was a film I saw the trailer for and immediately thought: yes, I want to see that. The film is about Jack Malik, who wakes up in a world where no one knows The Beatles. And if you think: so what? Well, that's quite a thing. Especially a goldmine, it turns out quickly. In no time, Jack Malik becomes the most famous singer-songwriter in the world and collaborates with among others Ed Sheeran. He even suggests whether ‘Hey Dude’ sounds much better than ‘Hey Jude’ (answer: no Ed, it doesn't sound better). Really a funny film, even if you're not that into The Beatles. Directed by Dany Boyle, from among others Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, and written by Richard Curtis. So it's all good.

5. The Sun Is Also A Star

I already wrote about this earlier and I stand by what I said then: you want to see it. Definitely also for Charles Melton, aka Reggie from Riverdale. Set in New York City and is a mix of sweet romance, drama, and light-hearted jokes. Ideal film if you don't want to think too much. In that sense, it's a bit of a dime-a-dozen film, but still a above-average fun one.

6. The Hustle.

Just like the film above, a non-thinking film, but then not in the romance genre but really comedy. Starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. One very elegant (Hathaway – not very surprising), the other amateurish and clumsy (Wilson – not surprising at all), and both are ‘professionally’ con artists. By chance, they run into each other and decide to work together to take down the men who once cheated them. Look, that's something I can get behind.
