Why we should all dive into that winter dip

If you type ‘dip’ in the search bar on Google, you first get the suggestion ‘little dip’ (we have to keep it small, of course) and then a trillion blue options to solve it. Logical, because the sooner you get rid of such a feeling, the better it is for you. You thought, but actually, you should lean into that dip and use it.

On a regular day, I'm such a cheerful stable person, you know her, but even I sometimes want to pull the curtains tight and bury myself under five series on Netflix and a bowl of salty popcorn. Or I go for a drive in the car, with the music at volume a thousand and cry really hard (and maybe tear a bit too hard), because it feels good. This sounds much more dramatic than it is, by the way. But I seem to be completely mismanaging that pout, as Quest Psychology proves. You should actually use it to get your point across, catch liars, or make a life-changing decision.

If the word ‘misery’ is written on your forehead, it makes you super sharp. It makes people analytical, leading to better results. And if you actually don't want to talk, because you could cry? Don't do it, because of those emotions, you are a bundle of conviction. You throw one relevant argument after another clearly at the ears of the object of your persuasion. Do you have that discussion already in your pocket before you start. Just slap yourself in the face in the bathroom and go.

If you thought this was it: nope, that sad mood gives you a Sherlock-like skill set. Suddenly, you're better at recognizing faces because you're not focused on the eyes but on the parts of a face. And you're a walking lie detector because you process external information more sharply. I hope many sad people work at MI6 and the CIA.

I mean: why do you still want to be cheerful? We need hopeless, sad people. They are superhumans in the making. Thankfully, it doesn't work that way either; it would become a dreary affair. All that sadness triggers you to solve it because you want to get rid of the feeling. Beautiful mechanism. But don't forget to tick off the important decisions in your life before you solve it, because you're better at that when you're in a slightly sad state. So indulge in that winter dip, you have more to gain from it than you think.
