Why you especially shouldn't exercise on the weekend

About eighty percent of people with a gym membership don't use it or barely do, it turns out. Look, that's where I save some cash again.

Because I really did have a membership at a trendy yoga studio in the past where there were more plants than exercise machines, but those times are (thank goodness) long gone. On average, ‘those people’, yes really, those who do go, go to the gym twice a week. That's perfectly fine, it's healthy, everyone can decide for themselves. But especially be lazy on your weekend: the most popular day to go exercise is Monday. And there's a reason for that.

Look, on the weekend you basically have no work to do, so you have fewer obligations on Saturday and Sunday. You can plan those two days of the week however you want. If you then force yourself to go exercise, you're actually burdening yourself with an annoying task. That ruins your weekend a bit and so you go to the office on Monday a lot less enthusiastic and rested. So you don't quite get there. You have to allow yourself that rest, that little pleasure of freedom and doing fun things. Because according to psychologists, we should mainly be engaged in the ‘art of doing nothing’ on those days off. Or, as the Italians can say much more beautifully: dolce far niente. Yes, that is necessary if you don't want to slowly go crazy from that ‘always being on’ and being reachable.

What we do understand: at least 30 percent of people don't sweat a drop when they go to the gym, because they mainly go to the workout class for the social chit-chat around it. So going together with that friend and then having a cup of coffee, because it's so cozy . And catching up while walking on the treadmill, but really moving vigorously? No way. Then you make it something enjoyable, of course. Go ahead, that's allowed, even on Sunday. But preferably you do nothing to clear your head. Otherwise, we have to catch you up on burnouts and depressions and no, that's not fun. So prevent all that misery and plan a day – especially now that it's still winter and dull and gray – nothing. Absolutely nothing. See what happens.

By the way, we go to the gym the least often on Fridays. Logical, then the drinks call. Hold on to this guys, until Monday. And thank us later for that lovely weekend.
