Why you should order a glühwein more often

As the end of the year approaches, I always become a bit kinder. A little soft.
Because, well, another year has passed – and look at everything that has happened in those past 365 days. Now that the last month of the year is really starting, it's wonderful to reflect back. Two children brought into the world: so it’s not too bad this year. And then just be careful not to burst into tears when you really replay all those months in your head. Highs and lows: everyone has them.
What especially fits this time of year is a good glass of glühwein. A bit of an underrated drink, if you ask me. Because with just one sip, you’re already fully in that end-of-year-Christmas-love-feeling. And you never drink it alone. Preferably at a cozy Christmas market, but hey: making it yourself on the stove is also an option.
But there’s more than just that lovely smell and that warm sip in your belly. There’s red wine in it, and red wine contains resveratrol. That substance is good for your memory. Added bonus: there’s a bit less alcohol in a glass of glühwein than in regular vino: 8 percent on average. And that makes toasting so much nicer, you can keep going all evening or get pleasantly tipsy in the afternoon. Moreover, it’s cheap: you don’t need expensive red wine to serve a nice glühwein to your December love.
Want to make it yourself? Here it comes:
1. Pour two bottles of (cheap) red wine into a pot.
2. Throw in half a lemon and half an orange and spice it up with cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom, and star anise. A tablespoon of sugar to taste.
3. Let it warm very gently (simmer for 40-50 minutes), because as soon as it boils, the alcohol evaporates (and you don’t want that). Ta-da, cheers.
And don’t think too much about the lows of 2019, okay? You have nothing to do with that in 2020.
