1. YouTube.com was founded in February 2005 by three buddies from the computer world: Chad, Steve, and Jawed. They sold their ‘pretty simple’ video platform to Google and made 350. Million. Dollars. Each. For. Holy cow.
2. The very first YouTube video ever (check it out here) is about one of the founders visiting a zoo. In a rather clumsy way, he says he thinks elephants, especially their trunk, are cool. Call it the first mini-vlog ever of 18 seconds. 104,833,801 views, that's insane.
3. Starting April 1, 2008, YouTube pulls an April Fool's joke every year. The first was that every visitor was immediately redirected to a music video by singer Rick Astley titled ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.
4. On April 1, 2019, they had a good one too, when all videos were turned upside down. With the advice that if you wanted to see them ‘normally’, you had to move to Australia. Love this.
5. Last year, someone calculated that Enzo Knol has earned a total of about 4 million euros. 2.2 million from YouTube and the rest from commercial deals and his own merchandise. Wow.
6. The most viewed and most liked video on YouTube is Despacito by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee with 6.77 billion+ views since January 2017 (!) Okay. Heavy. Almost seven billion views in just over three years = absurd.
7. The most viewed video that is not a music video is ‘Charlie bit my finger’. Okay, this is actually pretty funny.
8. Small estimate: purely from YouTube ad revenue, Monica Geuze earns about 12,000 a month. Sponsored deals, merchandise, and bookings are not included yet, huh. Good job, girl.
9. Awh. The video with the most dislikes is ‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber. WHY ACTUALLY?
