Drunk shopping is a new addiction: ordering online when you're drunk

It can't be true. I mean: yes, honestly, that's a lovely white summer dress with ruffles, flowers, and lace. But I already have six lovely white summer dresses hanging in my closet and I just ordered this seventh one for a shocking amount. Why, tell me why.
I completely blame my piss-yellow Chardonnay.
39 billion per year. That's what is sold worldwide to people who shop online after a glass of wine too many.
‘Drunk shopping’ is a new addiction: you're tipsy and you want something you never knew you wanted. You start looking on your phone at all those webshops, at luxury items here and nice products there. Suddenly you find that you deserve to treat yourself to a pair of Chanel sunglasses, a bag from Wandler, or a mountain of tops and shirts from Zara. Suddenly you find that you become happier from those new sneakers. And yes, you actually did need those ankle boots, hop, flop, into your cart and click away. Take another sip, okay? Cheers to that new skirt.
It's terrible but true: I completely recognize myself in this. In fact: I think I invented it. I love shopping intensely, especially online shopping. But I usually manage to stay big and mature and act wisely, because savings are something you want when you're 30+ and a mother. No, no, I don't need a white top with puff sleeves. And no, I already have sixteen pairs of flip-flops and my closet is overflowing with swimsuits. But okay. Then I drink that light beer in the sun. I enjoy the summer. I'm happy. Then I have a wine or two with dinner and suddenly I'm scrolling through six dresses and before I know it, I receive an email. ‘Thank you for ordering!’ Bought another swimsuit. Crying. Because it really isn't necessary. Why do I do it then?
I can't help it, it turns out. As everyone knows, alcohol causes more impulsive behavior and thus also those impulse purchases. Where you might not have gone shopping by bike after a nice drink in the past, nowadays you can buy everything with a few swipes on your phone. The combination of what alcohol does to your brain and the technical ease of today is disastrous for your savings account. I'm not the only one, thank god. At least 79 percent of people who drink alcohol occasionally are guilty of drunk shopping. Per year, we spend an average of 385 euros per person on things we order online when we're tipsy. What do we buy most often when we have a glass of wine in our hands? Clothes and shoes. Not entirely surprising, because that nice summer suit and those lovely cowboy boots can be easily justified for yourself. And then there's one more interesting fact found about drunk shopping. Those who shop online the most while drinking are men and women aged 36.. I am now 30 years old. That means only one thing. My goodness: the worst is yet to come. Anyone who needs a white dress can find me. But that swimsuit was really cute. I'm keeping it.
The Hustle.
