South Africa has a wine surplus of 240 million liters

Say wine lovers, if you had set a New Year's resolution this year to do a bit more volunteer work: this is your chance. Because let's be honest, you want to do something more active than just donating a sum of money every month, right? Actually do something good in return. Helping people out of trouble. I got you. I totally get it. So dive into the next project: help South Africa out of trouble. They are stuck with — the horror — 240 million liters of wine that they can't sell anywhere. Say no more, we come to the rescue.

No okay, the reason is a bit less fun. Yes, just like with every charity, there has to be a story behind it that touches you. Due to the corona crisis, the government in South Africa has imposed a ban on alcohol. Seriously, I don't know how you feel about it, but wine is literally what got me through that intelligent lockdown . If Rutte had announced at one of those press conferences that an alcohol ban would go into effect immediately... Well, I think he would have realized that it would lead to complete anarchy. And that's not what you want in your country during a pandemic.

By the way, they don't want that in South Africa either, so when this prohibition was announced, there was a massive rush in the stores. And I really tried to delve into the real reason behind this alcohol ban, but it hasn't become completely clear to me. Drunk people would do less social distancing. It would lead to less crime. And — this is the only reason I actually understand and support — there are fewer hospital admissions due to alcohol use and therefore more space for corona patients.

But anyway, the country is now stuck with a huge amount of liters of wine that they are not allowed to sell anywhere. And that means that there is also zero money coming in. I probably don't need to tell you that there are incredibly delicious wines from South Africa and that it would be quite dramatic if they all went bankrupt. So here it is, the charity of this year: SAVE. THE. WINE. From now on, only order wine from South Africa. Push through that prohibition. We can do this. Have an extra glass. What am I saying? Have an extra bottle. It's all for a good cause.
