Everything you want to know about Madam Vice President Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris

The first female, black vice president of the United States is a fact. Kamala Harris — that name must mean something to you by now unless you've been living under a rock lately — is the running mate of president-elect Joe Biden.

‘Although I am the first woman in this position, I will not be the last. Because every girl watching tonight will see that this is a country full of opportunities,‘ she said in her speech. By the way, it's worth watching again, because what a powerful, articulate, and intelligent woman. Especially that articulate and powerful is striking. Striking because Joe Biden does not always possess those two qualities: at 77 years old, he is also the oldest president.

Additionally, it was noticeable that he sometimes made a confused impression in his way of speaking, which of course was eagerly exploited by soon-to-be-ex-POTUS (such a delightful prospect) Donald Trump and his supporters. They were completely convinced that Joe Biden had dementia. I don't think that's entirely the case, but the fact is that he is already quite advanced in age. Is he still fit enough to hold his presidency for four years?

In the event that doesn't work out, we will get a very worthy replacement. Yes, Kamala Harris will most likely take over the baton. But who is this 56-year-old VP?

Harris's mother left India for the United States at the age of 19 to study here. She met Kamala's father, a Jamaican man, here. She didn't get her political involvement from a stranger: her parents were already heavily involved in civil rights, and Kamala was taken to multiple demonstrations in her stroller as a baby.

Joe Biden previously held the same position as Kamala Harris does now: he was the vice president under President Obama. So he knew better than anyone what this entailed and asked his wife for help on who he should choose as his running mate. Jill Biden, also an admirable woman, and he quickly settled on Kamala.

In her victory speech, she wore a (particularly beautiful) white suit, and that was no coincidence. White has been the color worn and associated with the Women’s Right Movement for decades. We first saw this in the early ’90s when there was lobbying to give women the right to vote. During the demonstrations, white was worn en masse. And that is still the case: during Trump's presidency, Nancy Pelosi was frequently spotted in white, and Hillary often wore a white outfit during her campaigns.

More recently, we saw Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in white suits (another woman you really want to know more about) and now Kamala Harris during her victory speech.

How likely is it that President Harris becomes a reality? Well, quite realistic. The chance that Joe Biden survives these four years (literally and figuratively) is quite large, but the chance that he will run for a second term is significantly less. He will be 81 then, and you should really retire by then: Kamala Harris would be the most obvious choice.

Does she have that ambition herself? YES. In fact, she wanted to run for the presidency this year but had to end her campaign early due to lack of funds. Where can I donate? Harris 2024, it seems so beautiful to me.
