The Curse of Glee

Superstitious I am actually not at all, but that something is not quite right with the cast of Glee seems as clear as day to me. After Naya Rivera went missing at Lake Piru in California, it didn't take long before everyone on the internet was talking about ‘the Glee curse’. It's not so strange either that three of the main cast members have passed away.

Starting with Cory Monteith, who was found on July 13, 2013, in the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver, after a heroin overdose. So I just started watching Glee (yes, yes, way too late, but I never thought it looked very fun and now I actually find it very fun) and I still find it hard to reconcile that Finn struggled so much behind the scenes with drugs like heroin. Cory was of course in a relationship with Lea Michele — who has recently been quite exposed because almost everyone who ever worked with her said she was a nightmare.

In other words, a literal copy of her Glee character Rachel Berry. I can imagine it’s not fun to work with her. But there were only positive stories to be found about Cory, so why that match then? I always love a good conspiracy theory and I am now 100 percent convinced that that relationship was only for PR.

After Cory Monteith came Mark Salling, also known as Noah Puckerman. He was arrested in December 2015 because over 50,000 images of child pornography were found on his computer. Initially, he pleaded not guilty, but in 2017 that changed. He was supposed to get between four and seven years and had to pay a substantial compensation to his victims. The most nauseating part of all this? He committed suicide, but not before transferring all his money to another account. Long live the American legal system, because that also meant that the compensation would become a difficult story (and they have not received it to this day).

A telling detail: Naya Rivera had a relationship with Mark in the first season of Glee, and said she was not surprised by his actions. Dodged a bullet with him, that is clear. But Naya is indeed the last victim of this ‘Glee curse’: on July 9, she went missing during a boat trip with her son. The police have since stated that she likely used her last strength to push son Josey back into the boat, but she had no strength left for herself.  Such a sad and tragic story. And what the Glee curse followers are really going wild about? That she was found on July 13 — the same date as Cory. Even cast member Kevin McHale (Artie) tweeted that this could not be a coincidence, that Cory had helped her.

Whether you believe that or not, it is in any case a fact that the Glee cast has not had much luck in life. Let's hope that from now on they all live long and happily. Because even watching it back is in such a way an emotional rollercoaster.
