Music lovers pay attention: The Prom on Netflix

Netflix the prom

Yesss, this is again a movie that I can genuinely look forward to. I should mention that I am a musical lover. Including singing along of course. Grease, Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia, West Side Story, High School Musical — you make me so happy with it. Yes, I even enjoyed Glee, even though it was so over the top. But musicals are usually always like that. Just like the new musical coming to Netflix: The Prom. Delightfully exaggerated and I bet singing along is guaranteed.

Starting with the cast, because it features many familiar (musical) faces. Hi Moulin Rouge, hi Mamma Mia… Because Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman are part of it. Also James Corden (or mister Carpool Karaoke) is joining. The lead role was actually supposed to go to Ariana Grande, but unfortunately that didn't happen: she was on tour during the filming and was therefore busy. Bummer. Jo Ellen Pellman was chosen to replace Grande. Quite a surprising choice, as Pellman is a newcomer in Hollywood.

And then the director, because heeellooo Glee and hellooo American Horror Story: yes, that's Ryan Murphy. So with that cast and this director, you already know it's going to be unapologetically enjoyable and especially so old-fashioned over the top.

Then the story. Not that we often watch musicals for the story — let's be honest — but just for the sake of it. Corden and Streep play two Broadway actors whose last show flops massively. It's such a failure that they are afraid their entire career is over. Therefore, they have come up with a brilliant plan: a charm offensive. And for that, they go to a high school in Indiana and encounter Emma Nolan (Pellman) there.

I already said it: the story doesn't really matter, because I still don't quite understand why choosing someone from a high school really works as a charm offensive, maybe as a publicity stunt or something? Anyway, everything revolves around The Prom and of course nothing goes as planned. But above all: A. Lot. Of. SINGING.

Just one and a half months to wait, because on December 11 it will be available on Netflix. Ziiiiihiiiinnnn in.
