3 good causes to help the people in Afghanistan

In no time, the situation escalated this week in Afghanistan. The Taliban claimed power and people sought refuge at Kabul airport to escape. Meanwhile, images are circulating of girls, still children, being dragged out of houses. Women are literally being removed from the streets and many people are on the run. The situation is so desperate that they are even clinging to departing airplanes.

Fear, nausea, anger, and despair, because what can you do? These are three organizations that are currently working in Afghanistan to help people.

1. Refugee Foundation
This foundation is actively helping refugees in a crisis situation by providing people with food, shelter, and medical care. Earlier this year, 329,000 Afghans were already on the run, and this number has increased enormously in recent weeks. In total, there are now 3.5 million Afghans who are fleeing. The Refugee Foundation is now focusing first on the capital Kabul, where the latest estimate indicates that about 40,000 families have fled. Donations can be made via this link.

2. Free a Girl
The Free a Girl Foundation works worldwide to combat the sexual exploitation of children. More and more horrific stories are coming from Afghanistan that girls and women are being promised against their will to so-called Taliban fighters as rewards and sex slaves. Free a Girl is doing everything possible to provide assistance to Afghan women and children. The foundation supports activist organizations worldwide and knows where help is needed and how to provide it.

3. Middle East Matters
Through this organization, you have the choice to directly support a good cause in Afghanistan, from Afghan activist women to rescue operations. Through Middle East Matters, it is not only possible to contribute financially, but also to see which volunteer organizations are looking for people who can provide physical help. The account shares on social media where your help is needed and directly shares messages from Afghanistan.

Want to do more?
In the meantime, you can sign this petition set up by War Child to allow Afghans on the run who have helped the Netherlands in any way to enter directly. These are people who are at great risk of retaliation because they contributed to the mission of the Netherlands in Afghanistan. And these are just the people in need, as there are so many more who need immediate help.
