5 questions you should ask yourself before quitting a job

woman in doubt

In America, the little creature already has a name: The Great Resignation. It turns out that 70 percent of working people are looking for a new job. And the Netherlands is not lagging behind, as resignation letters are flying around here as well. Are you also toying with the idea? These are the questions you can ask yourself.

1. Is it your job or everything that has nothing to do with your job?
It's always good to reflect on why you want that new job. Is it the job itself or is it about side issues? Those side issues often can't be changed much, as you can't just change a work culture. But perhaps there is still something to discuss about the job.

2. Is there still something to gain within your current job?
Speaking of that discussion. Many people think they need to immediately look for something else, but first, have a conversation with your current employer. If you enjoy working for a company and it suits you, then it's wise to see what your options are. A different position? Change in your task package? Or perhaps on a freelance basis, so you get a bit more freedom.

3. Is the grass really greener?
A different job sometimes seems like a panacea, but it isn't always. Look beyond that one person at your job interview. It might be smart to ask a future colleague for coffee under the pretext that you want to know a bit more. An excellent way to pick up something about the company culture and thus determine if it suits you.

4. Old shoes, new shoes?
It's wise to think about how you are going to resign. Do you want to be open with your current employer and say that you are looking for a new job? This could very well open up the conversation if you want it to. Or does that not feel safe and do you want to have a signature on your new contract before you go? The approach to your resignation determines how you part ways.

5. The most important: are you restless on Sunday?
This may seem like a strange question to ask yourself, but if you dread the upcoming Monday on Sunday, then it's quite clear. Not enjoying your work anymore is the best reason to look for something new.
