An ode to Francis van Broekhuizen

Dear Francis. We could be friends. You might not know it yet, but I do. I think you are amazing. Always your deepest self and nothing else. For all the late bloomers who missed the Francis party, I will lovingly catch you up. This is why Fran (opera singer, comedienne and now appearing in . After that, programs like) my spirit animal.

She is authentic
We humans have special feelers. We can immediately sense when someone is completely themselves. We love real people. Those who expose themselves and are entirely their authentic selves. Francis dares to do that and it takes a certain vulnerability that I admire.

She has humor and is a professional chatterbox
We humans have special feelers. We can immediately sense when someone is funny. We love funny people. Those who can pull one-liners out of their sleeves. Using humor to get through the day. Saying everything they think, no shame. Francis does it.

She has self-deprecation
We humans have special feelers. We can immediately sense when someone is self-deprecating—okay, now it’s getting annoying, but the fact that Fran doesn’t take herself too seriously is enlightening. She doesn’t care and just lets out a burp on a TV show when she has to. She isn’t ashamed of the things that are ‘wrong’ (what is wrong? When is someone a strange duck in the pond?) about her and doesn’t awkwardly try to change those traits. Yes, she is a bit eccentric, and that’s exactly why she is so fun.

Especially her voice
You really need to Google her now if you still don’t know what I mean. And especially the fact that that delightful semi-sarcastic speaking voice can suddenly switch to a bizarrely dramatic soprano.

She is the underdog
I wish that I could be like the cool kids, cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in. Francis is open about her bullying past. She didn’t fit in, was afraid to form relationships because people called her ‘ugly’ and my heart aches at the story that she sometimes paid a fortune to be allowed to play football. Now Fran can give a middle finger to everything and everyone, but of course, she doesn’t do that, that’s not her. Fran is loved now and stands stronger than ever.

She is also the most fun to follow on Insta
Just check for yourself. With her wife Jacqueline as two happy eggs. Doesn’t that make you cheerful?
